Azure & Benjamin’s Wedding at Burgie House

Photographing a wedding at a venue I’ve never been to before always excites me and as soon as I arrived at Burgie House, I sensed a good day was ahead of me.  Shortly after meeting Azure, Benjamin and their family I knew I was in for a good day!  Their warmth and friendliness was immediately apparent.

This was a very hand’s on wedding, with everyone mucking in to make sure Azure & Benjamin had the best day.  Just the sort of wedding I love to photograph.   There were little moments happening in every room and everyone was so busy, they hardly noticed me.

Many thanks to Azure & Benjamin (and Josie) for trusting me to photograph their amazing day.

Why did you choose Andy as your photographer?

Azure’s mom, Josie, was the one to find Andy — his pictures felt dynamic, conveying emotion and excitement. His colors also look to stand the test of time: classic, without the “made for instagram” feel that is common today.

Andy was a pleasure to work with. Friendly and invisibly present at all the right moments. He thought of great portrait ideas (for us, for the family, for the little kids). Andy successfully captured everyone in so many moods– lovey, celebrating, a toddler suspiciously eating chocolate pie… We were thrilled with how vibrant the pictures came out and how thoroughly they captured the day; we have many hung around our house and they always make us happy 🙂

The Venue

Why did you choose Burgie House as your venue?

This one is a funny story. We chose Burgie house for both familial and economic reasons. Our families are (like so many) of Northern Scottish descent, and we had wanted to visit with our parents for many years. However, we hadn’t originally imagined doing so for the wedding: we are from California, and originally planned to get married in the Bay Area. However, Airbnb began suggesting Scottish castles and manor homes to us just as we were feeling surprised at the expense of California venues. As it turned out, Scotland was quite reasonable, and far more grand, by comparison! Our families and friends were enthused about the idea (and about the whiskey that would be involved), so it was settled :).

The Dress

How did you go about choosing your outfits?

Our parents, family and friends made our appearances happen. Azure’s mom worked to design and sew the dress, Benjamin’s parents got him a lovely suit that they helped pick out (along with Azure’s shoes), Benjamin’s brother and his wife surprised us with a matching bracelet and cufflinks, Azure’s grandma supplied earrings… We picked out the rest together 🙂

The Venue

Did you have a particular theme, colour or feel for your wedding?

We got a bit lucky as far as color coordination goes. We knew we wanted it to be a colorful day, and for people to wear things that made them feel happy and comfortable. The skirt of my dress was made from a floral silk with many shades of red, green, blue and purple. To our surprise, the ladies at the wedding happened to wear every color of the rainbow!  Our wedding was in July, so flowers in all these colours were readily available. Fiona (as well as our friends and family) did a beautiful job making arrangements and decorations.

What was the favourite part of your day?

Azure: Looking out the window over the grounds in the morning and feeling ready, saying our vows and I do’s, hugging our parents and getting our pies safely to the display stand.

Benjamin: The getting married part. And then, the afternoon of toasting and rotating family/friend portraits outside.
