It is always a privilege to be asked to photograph the most important day in the life of a couple in love and with this privilege comes a responsibility that is never taken lightly. The joining of two families is such a significant moment in any family history and the simple fact that I am tasked with recording this momentous day is always at the forefront of my mind. The images that I produce will be kept in the family for generations.
For me it is about longevity. Will your wedding photographs stand the test of time? That is a question I often ask myself and I hope the answer is yes. Personally I avoid passing trends. Over the top, fashion type posing or excessively photoshopped images just isn’t my thing. I don’t believe images of that nature will stand the test of time. Light, texture, mood, composition, passion, emotion, energy and romance are just some of necessary elements to achieve enduring great photographs.
Each and every wedding I photograph involves photojournalism. These seemingly simple, yet often complex storytelling images are a huge part of the wedding photography I produce and couples love. It is the subtlety that makes these images great. They might not be instantly observed as ‘wow’ shots but they certainly pull on the heart strings. Whether it’s a delicate bite on the lip or a teary eyed glance, these often overlooked fleeting moments are to be cherished forever.
To be a true master of this art, I believe you must shoot this way exclusively to completely blend into the background unnoticed. That way you are free to observe quietly and capture those ‘decisive moments’. Personally I visualise so many images in my mind’s eye, I find it difficult to simply observe and capture. If I spot a location with fantastic light then I am going to make full use of it. With a little creative direction to ensure the light is falling where it should, the results can be amazing.
For me it’s about striking a balance between documenting your wedding through capturing real time moments juxtaposed with producing stunning imagery through creative direction.
